Last night, Christopher Nolan won the
Golden Globe
for Best Director of a Motion Picture for his work on Oppenheimer.
Before going on to thank his cast members Robert Downey Jr., Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, and Florence Pugh, the British director took a brief moment to remember his late collaborator, Heath Ledger. In 2008, Nolan accepted a posthumous Golden Globe on Ledger’s behalf for his iconic role as The Joker in The Dark Knight.

He also thanked Downey, who won best supporting actor in a motion picture for Oppenheimer and was also in attendance in 2008.
“In the middle of speaking, I glanced up and Robert Downey Jr. caught my eye and gave me a look of love and support. The same look he’s giving me now — the same love and support he’s shown so many people in our community over the years,” Nolan said. His words clearly struck a chord with the audience, as his speech was met with tears from Downey and multiple interludes of applause from the audience.
Nolan and Downey weren’t the only Oppenheimer-related wins of last night’s ceremony. Nominated in eight categories, Oppenheimer won five Golden Globes:
At the end of the evening, Oppenheimer came away as the most decorated movie of the evening, only losing out on awards for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, Best Screenplay of a Motion Picture (Christopher Nolan), and Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture (Emily Blunt).
